Furthermore, each specimen may exhibit multiple colours along its length or cross-section, appearing transparent or opaque. The term “Tourmaline” originates from the ancient Sinhalese word “turmali,” meaning “a mixed-colour precious stone,” or “turamali,” meaning “something small from the earth.” 

The most abundant species of Tourmaline, Schorl, makes up ninety-five percent of all Tourmaline found in nature. Schorl is a deeply dark blue, almost black, and its name was derived from the town of Schörl in Saxony, Germany, where Black Tourmaline was first discovered in nearby tin mines before the 1400s. 

The presence of Black Tourmaline, also known as Schorl, can often be observed in clear Quartz, referred to as Tourmalinated or Tourmalated Quartz. The stunning combination of these two opposite colours – radiant black and clear white – creates a perfect polarity of energies that manifests in the union of light and dark forces. It is believed that this blend of energy signifies great fortune, making it a symbol of immense value. 

Tourmaline is distinguished by its unique ability to become electrically charged when subjected to heat or friction.
